BOSTON (WHDH) - A retired Boston firefighter turned 100 years old on Thursday.

William Coakley celebrated his birthday with friends, family and city officials at the Fire Academy in Quincy. Mayor Marty Walsh and Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn honored Coakley’s 35 years of service.

Coakley revealed his secret to making it to 100.

“There’s really nothing to it,” he said. “All you have to do is wake up every day for a hundred years.”

Coakley said the thing he enjoyed most about being a firefighter is the people he worked with. Finn also recognized Coakley for the inspiration he has provided to younger firefighters.
