SALEM, N.H. (WHDH) - A toddler was injured Tuesday evening after police said her 7-year-old sister ran her over with a car.
On Tuesday at around 6:30 p.m., Salem Police said a woman called and told them her 7-year-old daughter accidentally ran over her 2-year-old daughter with a vehicle. When officers arrived at the apartment building on South Policy Road, they spoke with the mother, who told police she gave her 7-year-old daughter permission to start her car.
After starting the car, the child was able to shift it into reverse and the car began moving backwards, running over the 2-year-old, who had gone outside as well. The 2-year-old sustained injuries to her legs, chin, scalp and had some bruising on her rib cage and upper arm. She was transported to Lawrence General Hospital and then taken to Boston Children’s Hospital via medical helicopter.
Police said it appears this was not the first time the 7-year-old child was allowed to start the car. They plan to charge the mother with child endangerment.
The state’s Division of Children, Youth and Families is now involved in the investigation.
