EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a western Massachusetts police officer shot a man who was attacking another officer with a knife.

The Hampden district attorney’s office says 59-year-old Clifford Ahern sped away from a traffic stop Friday night when East Longmeadow police tried to arrest him on charges he assaulted a relative.

Authoriites say Ahern drove to his house, exited his car with a knife and charged an officer, whose shirt was torn by the knife. Another officer then shot Ahern.

Ahern is listed in critical but stable condition at a hospital. Authorities say the officer who was attacked has minor injuries.

The officers’ names haven’t been released.

The district attorney’s office said Ahern has a history of confrontations with police and violent crimes.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Ahern has a lawyer.
