Police are investigating after a man reportedly stabbed his mother in Worcester on Thursday.

Just before 2 a.m., police responded to a Terrace Drive home for a reported stabbing.

When officers arrived they were met at the door by a 30-year-old man. The man directed officers to a 52-year-old woman suffering from a stab wound to her lower back.

The woman was sitting on the kitchen floor holding a towel over her wound. She told officers she was stabbed by her son, the man who had answered the door. She said her son had a friend at the house earlier in the night and they  had been drinking. When the friend left the home, the mother and son got into a fight.

According to police, the son was holding a knife and swinging it around. The woman started to leave the room and then felt a sharp pain in her back. She was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The son was placed under arrested and was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and armed assault to murder.

He will be arraigned Thursday  in Worcester.
