LOWELL, MASS. (WHDH) - A Lowell man is facing charges after police said his 8-year-old son brought a gun to his elementary school.

Police said the boy took the gun out of his backpack and showed it to classmates at Greenhalge Elementary School on Oct. 25. One of the students told a parent, who then notified the school the following morning.

The boy allegedly thought the gun was an “Air-Soft” gun but it was actually a .25-caliber pistol.

The boy’s father turned the gun over to police. It was not loaded when it was turned over. The father also turned over two live rounds in a magazine. The boy’s father will now face charges of unlawful possession and improper storage of a firearm.

Parents said the school sent a letter home about a student bringing a weapon to school but the letter did not specify that it was a gun.
