LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Police say two Massachusetts men are facing drug trafficking charges following an investigation prompted by a recent surge in opioid overdoses.

Thirty-one-year-old Frederick Diaz and 26-year-old Leonardo Leger, both of Lowell, are charged with trafficking heroin over 200 grams, trafficking cocaine over 36 grams and related crimes. They are being held pending their arraignments Monday. It’s unclear if they have lawyers.

Police say they executed a search warrant at a Lowell apartment Saturday as part of the ongoing investigation into heroin distribution.

Police say the search uncovered 358 grams of suspected heroin, 69 grams of suspected cocaine, processing and packaging materials, 16 cellphones and more than $4,000 in cash.
