ORLEANS, MASS. (WHDH) - A lifeguard in training drowned during a test Saturday afternoon, according to the Orleans Fire Department.

Fire officials said Jack Jakubek, 22, of Newburgh, New York was performing a regularly scheduled fitness test shortly before 9:00 a.m. at Pilgrim Lake, when he went missing.

The test is held every year for people to compete for summer jobs on Cape Cod beaches.

Lifeguards and Fire Department personnel immediately began a search.

Jakubek was found by divers shortly before 9:30 a.m. off shore.

Crews began immediate resuscitation efforts, and Jakubek was brought by boat to shore. He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis where he was pronounced dead.

Jakubek was a captain for his college swim team at SUNY Cortland where he graduated from earlier this month.

The incident is under investigation by the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.
