SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Springfield police say a city man has been killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Sgt. John Delaney says police responded to reports of shots fired at about 5:50 a.m. Wednesday.

He says it started when a man fired a shotgun at his estranged girlfriend. She was unhurt.

The man continued firing into the air, and then started shooting at officers arriving at the scene.

Officers returned fire, striking the man. Police performed CPR but the man died at the hospital.

Police identified him as 44-year-old Louis Squires.

Police said the disturbance began after Squires' 27-year-old estranged girlfriend, Ethel McCreary of Springfield, smashed windows on his rental car. McCreary pleaded not guilty to malicious damage to a vehicle and was held for a mental health evaluation.
