BOSTON (WHDH) - A manhole fire sparked near the site of an earlier water main break in Chinatown around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

As officials worked to repair a broken water transmission line that flooded water onto Kneeland and Washington Streets, multiple manhole fires broke out.

Smoke entered surrounding buildings as crews worked to extinguish the flames.

It is unclear if the fire is directly related to the major water main break that began shortly after 5 a.m.

MBTA buses were rerouted due to the fire activity, and surrounding streets in the area were closed.
