PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Eight people were arrested in Providence after a melee broke out as officers were trying to arrest a man with an outstanding warrant.
Police say it happened around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in front of a home where a group of people, including 18-year-old Andrew Brown, had gathered. Brown was wanted by Cranston police.
Authorities say Brown fled in a car when police tried to arrest him. They say he crashed and then fled on foot before he was found lying behind a garage with a gun near him.
Police say a group of 50 to 100 people surrounded officers as they drove away with Brown.
Seven women were arrested, including one who police say was recording the incident and wouldn’t leave the street.
It’s unclear whether Brown has a lawyer.
