TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) — More than 100 protesters turned out to rally against a 10-cent toll set to begin Monday on the new Sakonnet River Bridge, a day after a fire damaged power lines to equipment for the toll system.
The Providence Journal reports many protesters wore "Don't Tread on Me" shirts as they gathered Sunday at the bridge connecting Tiverton and Portsmouth. Some motorists honked to show support.
The toll has upset local residents and business owners, but the state Turnpike and Bridge Authority says it's needed for bridge maintenance and repair.
The Providence Journal reports a fire set Saturday involved power lines for toll collection equipment. But tolling is expected to begin as planned.
The new toll system will read E-ZPass transponders and license plates. Drivers without transponders will be billed.
