CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY (NBC) — A day in the life of a police officer was the dream of a young Kentucky man with Down syndrome, one he wished for for his upcoming birthday next week.

“He’s so loving and so good with the officers,” Chief Patricia Thompson of Campbellsville police said about Brannan Wheatley.

Wheatley’s dream for quite some time was to wear the badge alongside many officers he sees every day.

Police got Wheatley a uniform, and Wednesday morning he was sworn in to the Campbellsville Police Department in front of friends and family.

Alongside his partner Officer Andy Warren, Wheatley took off, patrolling the streets of Campbellsville and making is official first traffic stop—handcuffs and all.

In a profession where many would steer away from because of recent law enforcement tragedy,
Wheatley is eager to be a part of it simply to lend a helping hand.

In addition to being sworn in, Wheatley was also given a proclamation by Governor Matt Bevin to honor his ‘Officer for the Day’ duties.
