N.Y. boy writes to Obama, asking if he can adopt Syrian refugee

WASHINGTON (WHDH) - A New York boy wrote a letter to President Barack Obama, asking if he could help his family adopt a Syrian refugee.

Alex, who is 6 years old, asked Obama if he could get the boy “who was picked up by the ambulance in Syria.” The boy Alex is referring to is 5-year-old Omran Daqneesh, who appeared in a poignant photograph last month. In the picture, Omran is sitting in the back of an ambulance in Aleppo, bloody and covered in dust. He and his family remain in Aleppo.

Alex told Obama his family wanted to adopt Omran. “Park in the driveway or on the street and we’ll be waiting for you with flags, flowers and balloons,” wrote Alex. “We will give him a family and he will be our brother.”

Alex goes on to say that he wants Omran to come to school with him and meet his friends and that he and his little sister Catherine will share their toys with him. At a meeting to discuss the Syrian refugee crisis this week, Obama read Alex’s letter to the world leaders in attendance.

A viral video of Alex reading his letter has been watced more than 7 million times.
