CHATHAM, MASS. (WHDH) - Swimmers along the Massachusetts coastline will no longer have to search the horizon for fins.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is debuting a new app this summer that will allow users to track confirmed shark sightings right on their phone.
Users can also report a sighting and upload photos to the app.
The Conservancy, based in Chatham, are working to tag sharks in the area this summer. Officials said 24 white sharks were tagged last season and 100 new ones identified.
They said the app, which will be released on July 1, is for safety and research.
“The app is going to allow people to see information on visual sightings of white shark, acoustic detection, which are tagged white sharks that pass something called a receiver, and also alerts,” Cynthia Wigren, of the Conservancy, said.
A shark center has now also been opened in Chatham.
Flags will be flown on the beaches when sharks have been seen in the area.
