A New Hampshire man was charged with driving under the influence after he almost struck a pedestrian while driving to the hospital, according to Claremont police.

Police said they received a call for an unknown medical emergency in the area of School Street shortly after 11:00 a.m. A second call came in from a man requesting assistance shortly after, but contact with the caller was lost.

Emergency crews were sent to the area, and officials learned the man, 54-year-old Bradley Ames of School Street, had driven himself to Valley Regional Hospital.

Witnesses at the hospital described Ames as diving into the parking lot erratically and at a high rate of speed, nearly striking a pedestrian.

According to police, Ames entered the hospital and then attempted to leave shortly after.

Police then arrested Ames for driving under the influence.

In close proximity to the incident, the Claremont Police Department was investigating a chemical odor complaint at Ames’ address. Claremont Police had also been collecting information about a possible methamphetamine cook at his address.

Police executed a search warrant of the home, and based on evidence gathered during the search Ames was given an additional charge of conspiracy to commit the crime of manufacturing methamphetamine.

Ames will be arraigned in the 5th Circuit Court, Claremont District Division on Friday.

Police said additional arrests are expected as a result of this investigation.
