STEWARTSTOWN, NH (WHDH) — Police in New Hampshire and Vermont are searching for a prisoner at Coos County Jail who walked away from the facility.

New Hampshire State Police received the report on Thursday that the man, Brendan Bernier, left the jail in Stewartstown. He was last seen near the recycling center in the town at approximately 8:30 a.m.

State Police Troopers, K-9 units, US Border Patrol, and Colebrook Police are searching the area.

Police say Bernier has ties to Berlin, Gorham, and Bethlehem areas of New Hampshire and may also have contacts in St. Johnsbury in Vermont.

Bernier was serving a sentence for motor vehicle violations for which he had been deemed a habitual offender.

Police say he has burn scars on his forehead on the left side of his face.
