AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The Northeastern United States is still in a drought despite recent rain that has improved conditions in some areas.

The U.S. Drought Monitor map shows parts of southern New Hampshire and Massachusetts remain in an extreme drought.

Most of the rest of New England and New York is either in a severe drought or a moderate drought.

Parts of Maine have improved, but National Weather Service hydrologist Tom Hawley says Thursday that the state is not out of the drought yet.

The U.S. Geological Survey says surface water gauges in Maine are in the normal range, though some are low or very low. A state authority in Maine says ground water levels will take longer to recover.

Authorities say residents can help by taking shorter showers and conserving water use.
