PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy and his wife, Amy, are expecting their second child together, he said on Tuesday.

Her due date is on Thanksgiving, and they're expecting a girl.

"I'm very, very excited. We all are," he told The Associated Press.

The Kennedys married in 2011 and live in Brigantine, N.J. They have a son, Owen, who is 16 months old. Amy also has a 5-year-old daughter, Harper, from a previous marriage.

"We're in the process of building a house, and we were just at the stage of painting. We had a little extra impetus to find out whether we have a little boy or little girl so we could paint the nursery the appropriate color. So, it will be pink," he said.

He said the house should be ready to move in before the baby arrives.

Amy Kennedy is a public school teacher, and her husband says she is currently teaching science to seventh-graders.

Patrick Kennedy, the son of the late Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, left Congress in 2011 and since then has worked on several initiatives to improve mental health care and research. They include One Mind for Research, an effort to improve funding for brain science and better coordinate research.

In July, he announced The Kennedy Forum, an effort to bring mental health workers and advocates together to improve treatments for mental illness, addictions and intellectual disabilities. It will be launched in October.
