Newaygo County, Michigan (NBC) — A preliminary hearing was held in Newaygo County, Michigan Friday for a woman accused of murder, with a parrot as the only apparent witness to the crime.

A judge ruled earlier this week that Glenna Duram is competent to stand trial in the murder of her husband, Martin Duram.

Duram was shot to death in his home in May of 2015.

Authorities say Duram shot her husband five times and then attempted to take her own life but survived a bullet wound to the head.

The couple’s pet, and African parrot, apparently witnessed the shooting and began recounting words from the victim just moments before his death.

The parrot has been recorded as saying “Don’t (expletive” shoot.”  The bird appears to mimic sounds of an arguments between a male and female.

The prosecutor in the case has said if needed, he would use the parrot as a witness in the case against Duram.
