BOSTON (WHDH) - Officials are working on a plan to expand South Station, but not everyone is on board with the project.

It is still in its very early stages, but the plan would add about 30 more trains to the tracks.

That means, during the slow part of the day, the Mass Department of Transportation will need somewhere to store the additional trains.

The plan would require dozens of acres in the city, which has residents addressing concerns that businesses will be pushed out.

The expansion, which wouldn’t happen for years down the road, would add seven more tracks and four platforms to the existing South Station, creating space for over 30 additional trains.

The state is working on a study to explore possibilities surrounding this plan.

If the plan goes through it will cost around $1.6 billion.
