SALISBURY, MASS. (WHDH) - State police are investigating the death of a 70-year-old Beverly woman whose vehicle was found abandoned near the Whittier Bridge in Newburyport, officials said.

Troopers responding to a report of an abandoned vehicle in the breakdown lane of Route 95 southbound near the bridge, which spans the Merrimack River, didn’t find a motorist.

After investigating and finding personal items belonging to the woman, her home address was checked and troopers were unable to find her there.

That’s when the State Police Air Wing, K9 unit, Underwater Recovery Unit, the Environmental Police, and the US Coast Guard responded to search for the woman by land, water, and air.

At 3:15 p.m., a canoeist in the wetlands along the river located a body in the water. The body was recovered by the coast guard and determined to be the woman whose car was found on the highway.

The investigation into the cause of the woman’s death is active and ongoing, state police say.

Her name is not being released.
