MIDDLEBORO, Mass. — A police officer and two other people were rushed to the hospital after a cruiser and an SUV collided head on in Middleboro.

Police say the crash happened on Wareham Street at about 4:30 p.m.

Fire crews used the Jaws of Life to extricate a 40-year-old male trapped in a Jeep. Police say a second victim in the Jeep, a 30-year-old female, was extricated from the vehicle. Both were seriously injured and were transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

The Middleboro police officer was transported to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth.

“The complex incident was magnified by a series of issues; the initial medical helicopter had a mechanical failure enroute and was unable to respond, the second medical helicopter was cancelled due to the prolonged response time and one of the ambulances sustained a flat tire from debris on scene, forcing the EMS crew to transfer the patient into another ambulance on the scene. All first responders did an outstanding job adapting to the dynamic incident,” said Chief Lance Benjamino, Middleboro Fire Department.

Conditions of the patients were not immediately known.
