A head-on collision in Florida killed a sheriff’s deputy and a wrong-way driver.

Authorities say Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputy John Robert Kotfila Jr. had just left a hospital Saturday where he had just been working on a crash investigation.

The collision occurred on the Selmon Expressway near Tampa.

A woman involved said she was driving down the highway when she saw headlights barreling towards her. She pulled over to the breakdown lane, where she said she thought she was going to get hit.

She said Deputy Kotfila raced ahead of her and put his patrol car between her and the wrong-way-driver, causing a crash. She said Kotfila acted as a human shield, saving her life.

Massachusetts state police expect to hold their own service to honor Deputy Kotfila sometime next week, after he is honored in Fla. and his body is brought back to Cape Cod.
