LEOMINSTER, Mass. (AP) — Police say the former mayor of Leominster is in critical condition after his vehicle went out of control and hit two vehicles and two telephone poles before stopping.

Police Chief Michael Goldman says former Mayor Raymond Harper suffered serious injuries in the incident that occurred on state Route 13 around 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Harper was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester where he was in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.

Lt. Richard Kinney says a preliminary investigation determined the 71-year-old Harper appeared to have been suffering from a medical emergency when the incident occurred. An investigation is underway.

Harper served as mayor of Leominster from 1980-1981.
