SOUTHBRIDGE, MASS. (WHDH) - Police in Southbridge have told people to be on the lookout following increased reports of bears who are searching for food.

Officials say bears have been spotted foraging for food before winter and are especially attracted to bird feeders.

“Please don’t leave any food out,” the Southbridge Police posted on their Facebook page. “They will find it!”

The department urged people not to draw attention to yourselves if you see a bear and to calmly back away. If the bear is in your yard, making loud noise – like banging pots and pans – usually scares them off.

Additionally, removing bird feeders, garbage, and compost will help keep bears from being attracted to the yard.
