MERRIMAC, MASS. (WHDH) - Two people were killed in a single-car crash on Thursday.
The crash happened on Route 495 northbound, south of Exit 53.
According to State Police, the crash involved a 2004 Ford Econo passenger van with six passengers.
Police said seat belts were a factor, meaning some, if not all, seat belts were not being used.
The men were transported to area hospitals. One was pronounced dead on scene; another was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he later died.
Four other occupants in the vehicle were seriously injured.
Police said it appeared the men were on their way to work, as there was construction equipment in the van. Officials are investigating whether the tire might have blown, causing the operator to lose control of the vehicle.
The highway was reopened just before 10 a.m.
