PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Providence police officer seen on video punching and dragging a woman when she resisted arrest is being disciplined.

Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare (PA’-ree) didn’t say how Officer Michael Place would be punished for the May encounter. Pare said Thursday that Place could have done things differently and was put in a predicament where he had to use force.

Federal prosecutors also reviewed the encounter and determined that action wasn’t appropriate.

The video captures part of a disturbance on May 23. A police report says Place saw the woman smashing things on the porch and turned to hit him. Place said he was struggling with the first woman when a second woman jumped on him.

Both women were charged.

The police union did not immediately respond to a telephone request for comment.
