QUINCY, MASS. (WHDH) - State Police closed Newport Avenue and Douse Road near Furnace Brook Parkway in Quincy due to a water main break.

The break happened at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Thousands of gallons of water gushed out onto the street for at least half an hour before the water could be shut off.

Around 20 families lost water due to the break but their water service has since been restored. Some residents had to deal with their basements flooding. One family told 7News there is at least a foot of water in their basement.

Crews were on the scene Wednesday night fixing the broken pipe before repairs on the road could begin. The Department of Public Works said they hope to have the road open for Thursday’s morning commute.
