HOLYOKE, MASS. (WHDH) - A sign featuring the name of Holyoke’s mayor was defaced with graffiti.

Mayor Alex Morse, who is openly gay, tweeted about the vandalism and thanked the residents who took the sign down.

“I’m the mayor, I can handle,” tweeted Morse. “But our LGBT youth need to know they’re loved and safe in the city.”

This latest crime comes after Morse received a homophobic card that was mailed to his house over the weekend.

Morse said he saves every hateful message sent to him as motivation.
