BOSTON (WHDH) - A Massachusetts State Police cruiser stolen from a maintenance facility in South Boston Monday morning was recovered that afternoon in Somerville.

The cruiser, which was in the Massachusetts Department of Transportation service yard for engine problems, was believed to have been taken at some point in the morning from D Street in South Boston. Once the cruiser was reported missing, police said they disabled the cruiser’s radio system. Police said the cruiser was found abandoned just before 1 p.m. at Twin City Plaza on Medford Street in Somerville.

The cruiser, a marked SUV, is a spare, meaning it is not assigned to a specific trooper and serves as a temporary replacement for those whose cruisers are out of service. No firearms or less-lethal weapons were in the cruiser.

Police said it does not appear that any equipment in the cruiser was taken and the cruiser was not damaged.

An investigation is ongoing.
