SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (NBC) — Seat belts saved the lives of a driver and her four children after their SUV plunged off a bridge into the San Antonio river this morning.

The accident happened on I-10 just south of downtown.

Police say the driver saw heavy traffic ahead and slammed on the breaks.

The SUV swerved and then hit the concrete wall just before flying off the bridge.

The driver and the four children, ages 3 to 11, were all wearing seat belts.

All five were taken to the hospital to be checked out, but none of them suffered any major injuries.
