Texas college student receives backlash for blackface picture

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX (NBC) — A Texas college student is receiving backlash for posting a picture on social media in blackface.

The picture shows a White Prairie View A&M student with her face wrapped in black tape.  The caption under the picture reads “When you’re tryna fit in at your H-B-C-U.”  (Historically Black College and University).

Some people have called for the freshman student to be expelled while others question why it was posted in the first place.  Other students say mean comments posted about the student are uncalled for.

The present of the school has released a statement over the backlash the picture has received.  He says the school has “a duty to educate the community…to act in a responsible manner…and to recognize that speech does have consequences.”

The school has not announced if any disciplinary action will be taken against the student.
