CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Police say streets will be closed and security tight during this week’s events marking the anniversary of the shootings at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

Police announced Tuesday that roads will be closed during a memorial service Friday at the College of Charleston’s TD arena. There will also be street closings the next day during a unity walk in the city.

Friday is the anniversary of the fatal shootings of nine black parishioners during a Bible study at the church.

Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said during a news conference that the security plan was developed before 49 people were gunned down over the weekend in an attack at an Orlando, Florida, nightclub.

But Mullen said the Orlando incident confirms that what police are doing in Charleston is absolutely needed.
