PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WHDH) — Police in Providence are looking for the gunman behind a deadly shooting at a graduation party.

Investigators said 12-year-old Aynis Vargas was one of several people celebrating outside their home on Saturday night when someone walked up and opened fire. Vargas was killed in the shooting.

Three other people were also shot, but they are expected to be okay. Neighbors were horrified by what happened.

“She’s innocent, doesn't even know what's going on, and now I feel bad because she had a lot of future dreams and somebody took it away from her,” Conteh said.

Another said he’s sick of seeing children become victims of deadly crimes.

“No longer are we gonna just stand by and watch while our children now become victims in the street. We have to stop it. So I think that as men it’s time that we stood together and say to the city of Providence that no longer are we gonna have it,” one man said.

Police say Vargas was outside a home on Hartford Avenue for a graduation party when someone opened fire.

“I couldn't even sleep yesterday, cause the moment I opened the door, that’s when it happened and I was thinking it could have been me, because the person next to me got shot too,” said Juliana Conteh, neighbor.

Aynis would have started middle school in the fall. Her father said she liked singing and acting and had lots of energy.

Relatives and friends held a vigil in honor of Vargas Sunday night.

No arrests have been made.
