LAWRENCE, MASS. (WHDH) - A home in Lawrence went up in flames on Monday as heavy fire burned through the two-story house.

The fire sparked at a two-unit house on Oregon Avenue. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion.

No people were inside either of the units when the fire broke out but two dogs were rescued by firefighters. Both of the animals were unconscious and unresponsive when they were rescued but managed to pull through.

Firefighters said the flames and extreme heat made it difficult to get the fire under control. Gleny Mercado, who lives next door, said her house was spared but the windows on the side facing the fire all shattered and there was damage to the siding.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Red Cross is assisting the two families who have been displaced.
