CLEVELAND (AP) — A man who accidentally shot his 2-year-old nephew and 9-year-old niece with one bullet as the children slept at a Cleveland home has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Prosecutors say 31-year-old Lindsey Curry was sentenced Thursday for the July 2015 shooting that left his niece paralyzed from the waist down with a bullet lodged near her spine. Authorities say the bullet passed through the boy’s abdomen and hit the girl’s shoulder and spinal cord.

Defense attorney Fred Middleton said Friday his client will appeal the conviction.

Curry was convicted on child endangering and tampering with evidence charges.

Cleveland.com reports Curry and the children’s mother initially told authorities someone fired into the home and Curry said he was awakened by gunfire.
