Gonorrhea, one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States, is growing resistant to initial antibiotic treatment.

STDs are usually treated by a series of antibiotics but the Centers for Disease Control reports gonorrhea has grown resistant to azithromycin, the antibiotic commonly prescribed.

A combination treatment of multiple drugs, including azithromycin, still works but medical experts say that will not last forever.

The report was published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
