One of University of Southern California’s top football players is off the field and under scrutiny.

Josh Shaw, one of the Trojans’ top cornerback and team captain, is off the field due to a pair of high ankle sprains that he suffered over the weekend.

Shaw and his family said he hurt himself when he jumped from a second floor balcony to save his nephew from drowning on Saturday. Just hours after learning of his heroism, officials at USC received calls that contradicted Shaw’s story.

Los Angeles Police said a man named Josh Shaw was mentioned in a report about a break-in at an apartment at about the same time. Police said he is not a suspect in the case.

USC’s head coach said he is looking into the incident.
