NORWOOD, MASS. (WHDH) - Firefighters responded to a massive fire at an abandoned factory in Norwood Wednesday night.

The fire started at the vacant soap factory on Davis Avenue and continued to burn into Thursday morning. Heavy flames consumed the building and the second story collapsed.

The fire chief said no one was injured in the massive fire but firefighters did have problems getting water on the flames. Environmental agencies were on the scene Thursday to determine if chemicals from inside the building ran off into a nearby brook when doused with water from the firehoses.

Fire officials said the warehouse has been vacant for several decades and it is possible that homeless people had gained access to the building. Firefighters said human involvement is the likely cause but it is not known yet if the activity was intentional or accidental.

Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding the fire to call the Arson Hotline at 1-800-682-9229. The Arson Watch Reward Program provides rewards of up to $5,000 for information.
