BEDFORD, MASS. (WHDH) - Wild weather knocked down trees and power lines in Bedford Friday afternoon.

Police said at around 4:15 p.m., a lightning strike hit live power lines on Page Road, causing them to fall onto the ground. The wires then burst into flames; due to the extreme heat, the fire scorched the pavement and left a hole.

“It sounded like what I imagine an earthquake would sound like,” said Becky Titlow. “Then the power in the house went out and it was like everything exploded. It was really scary.”

Page Road from Brooksbie Road to Francis Kelly Drive was shut down. Old Billerica Road was also closed in the area of Route 258 due to a downed tree. Some homes lost power after the wires came down and the electricity has since been restored.

The extreme heat was a major trigger in the severe weather.
