PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — High winds are causing power outages across Maine.

Utility companies said about 55,000 customers were without electricity by midday Thursday.

Bangor Hydro Electric Co. reported almost 13,000 customers without power. And Central Maine Power reported more than 42,000 outages. Lincoln and Kennebec counties are seeing the highest number of outages.

Tom Hawley of the National Weather Service says winds have gusted to 63 mph in Bath, 57 mph in Turner, 54 mph in Augusta and 49 mph in Portland. Offshore, he says it hit 74 mph at Matinicus Rock.
