A driver was arrested after police said he rear-ended a woman’s car in Dorchester before striking her twice, injuring her.

Police said they were able to track down the man behind the wheel thanks to an alert city worker. Joseph Morrison, 28, was arrested and pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to several charges.

Prosecutors said it began when Morrison struck a car on Blue Hill Avenue just before 9 a.m. When the driver got out to exchange papers with Morrison, police said he struck her twice before speeding away.

Prosecutors said 61-year-old William Joyce, of Boston, witnessed what happened and followed the suspect while calling 911. Morrison then crashed and was subsequently arrested.

Morrison has a 6-year-old daughter. His fiancee said the charges against him are out of character for him.

Morrison was held on $5,500 cash bail. If he posts bail, he has been ordered to stay away from any of the witnesses.

The woman was hospitalized with wrist and foot injuries but is expected to recover.
