A young girl pulled from a pond in West Newbury Sunday afternoon has died.

Police said the girl was pulled from the west side of Mill Pond just before 1 p.m. after somehow ending up in the water. Emergency responders performed CPR on the girl and she was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"This is currently a very sad time, especially on Easter, to have to deal with this," said West Newbury Police Chief Art Reed.

The girl has been identified as Elizabeth Dayter, 2 1/2 years old. Officials said her death is not suspicious but remains under investigation by the West Newbury Police and Massachusetts State Police.

According to police, Dayter was visiting family friends in West Newbury on Easter Sunday. Her family had just recently moved to Amesbury.
