Red Sox lose to Cardinals, 5-2

The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 last night. Adam Wainwright recovered from a shaky start to earn his 14th win, and rookie Kolten Wong homered twice. Mike Napoli and Christian Vasquez each drove in a run for the last place Red Sox.

The Red Sox scratched David Ortiz from the lineup against the Cardinals because of concerns about wet grounds after daylong rains saturated the field. Mike Napoli replaced Ortiz at first base. Ortiz pinch hit in the eighth and lined out.

The Red Sox have activated utilityman Kelly Johnson from the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin and optioned rookie Mookie Betts to Triple-A Pawtucket. Johnson was not in the lineup for last night’s game against the Cardinals.
