A man was killed in a large fire at a home in West Newbury on Tuesday.
According to officials, the victim, an elderly man, is believed to be the homeowner, but authorities are waiting on a positive identification from the medical examiner.
The fire broke out Tuesday morning on Meeting House Hill Road.
The roof of the home collapsed as crews worked to knock down the fire.
Three firefighters were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.
Neighbors said the flames were so intense they could not see firefighters go inside.
An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the fire.
"This was an extremely involved fire, and it took the combined efforts of several fire departments to bring the fire under control," Chief Dwyer said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family during this difficult time."
This is the 19th fire death so far in 2016, authorities said.
