Gloucester school officials are investigating after police said a group of their students assaulted a student from Tewksbury following a hockey game in Billerica.
Police said people were leaving the rink Friday after the Gloucester’s hockey playoff win over Tewksbury. A group of Gloucester students allegedly started taunting a student from Tewksbury before the student was attacked. Billerica Police Deputy Chief Roy Frost said the Tewksbury student was taken to the hospital with head injuries.
One Gloucester student was arraigned in juvenile court for aggravated assault and battery with serious bodily injury but Frost said more people were involved in the attack. Gloucester school officials are conducting their own investigation and said eight students have been disciplined over the incident.
"It’s important for students to come to athletic contests and to cheer on their team and to show their enthusiasm and to provide support," said Gloucester Superintendent Dr. Richard Safier. "But to pass over into this dark side of taunting and violence is unacceptable."
Both teams met again Tuesday for another playoff game and the police presence was increased at the ice rink.
