It’s being called the safest helmet in the game of football.

A start-up company is attempting to make how the game is played safer.

One year after receiving the grant from the NFL, the company has now unveiled the new device.

As pediatric neurosurgeon, Dr. Samuel Browd has helped many athletes with concussions.

"We see hundreds of kids come through our program every year for concussion," Browd said.

Concerned that current helmets weren’t safe enough, he reached out to the chair of the mechanical engineering department at the University of Washington.

"So we came together and tried to solve this societal problem," he said.

Over the last two-and-a-half years, they came up with a four-layer helmet with a shell that absorbs impact, a layer that prevents skull fractures and another that improves the fit for athletes.

The helmet also has a semi-soft exterior shell.

The product was created in input from doctors, engineers and athletes.

If it passes a final safety test, they hope to have NFL and college athletes using the helmet a soon as the 2016 season.
