(NBC) — For years it’s been understood that pasta, high in carbs, is bad for people who are trying to lose weight.

One study is tossing that all out the window.

Researchers at the Department of Epidemiology in Pozzilli, Italy, published a report in the Nutritional and Diabetes Journal say that pasta may not be so bad for you after all.

The researchers analyzed a large group of people, finding that instead of increasing body weight, pasta actually played a role in decreasing body weight.

The study showed that individuals who consumed pasta – according to their individual needs – experienced a healthy BMI, a smaller waist size, and better waist-hip ratios.

Experts suggested that consumers consider adding pasta back into their diets in moderation, touting its many health benefits.
