I mentioned on Friday that with colder air moving in, we were “setting the table” for more winter-like weather.  Well, it by the looks of this week’s forecast, winter is finally here.  From a little bit of accumulating snow on Monday to downright COLD by next weekend, there’s no doubt about it!  So it begins…

While this is not significant snow on the way for Monday morning, it is the first steady snow of the season and it could cause some problems.  This steady snow, while light, is also falling during the Monday morning commute.  In my humble opinion, with all of these factors considered (Monday morning, first “snow event,” rush-hour, etc) the timing couldn’t be worse.  Very generally speaking, we’ll only see about a coating to an inch of snow accumulation in most spots.  We won’t need plows and we shouldn’t need shovels (maybe a broom this time around).  However, it’s enough snow to make for slick conditions and a slow-go for Monday morning.  Here’s the timeline:

Snow spreads into Worcester County by 5am, and then over the rest of us by 7am…

This is a “light snow” event, but it could be falling steadily enough at times to reduce visibility down to a mile or two.

This steady light snow will continue through the morning, with temps slowly warming across the South Coast and working north… turning the snow to “wet snow” and then eventually to cold rain.  You can see here that by about 10 or 11am, Boston is into the “wet snow” and slick spots on roads become less likely for SE Mass.

All of this action will taper off during the early afternoon.  Of course the coldest spots N & W of 495 will see snow the longest, which means they will see the highest snow totals.  All said and done, here’s what we’re in for:

See!  Not all that much – but still, something we need to plan ahead for.  Pack your patience and allow for extra time for the Monday morning commute.  Also, keep in mind that temps will likely drop below freezing once again late Monday night into early Tuesday morning – so what is left untreated tomorrow afternoon/evening will become icy.  A dry day is expected Tuesday, but then we could be in for another round of wintry-mix by Tuesday morning.  Most likely the snow will stay well NW on Wednesday, but we’re still watching this.  Also, more showers-to-wintry-mix are in store for Thursday afternoon/evening.  It’s a busy, wintry-week ahead… and that’s all before the ARCTIC AIR arrives on Friday.  Hold on tight, because here we go!  – Breezy
