Elaine Thompson, 24, edged U.S. sprinter Tori Bowie and fellow Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to claim the Olympic 100m gold medal.

It was the third Olympic 100m medal for Fraser-Pryce. Fellow Jamaican Merlene Ottey is the only other woman with three Olympic 100m medals. 

The first round of the men’s 100 was held earlier on Saturday. Justin Gatlin clocked 10.01 seconds, the fastest time of the first round, to win his heat by .19 seconds. Usain Bolt won his heat in 10.07 seconds. The men’s 100m semifinal and finals will both take place Sunday night.
